YOUTH GROUP - AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Our aim is to provide a safe place for children of secondary school age to meet.
We organise activities, and try to give them the chance to connect with the Church and with each other, particularly as there is no Catholic secondary school in the parish.
The group is open to all children of the right age, of any faith or none. There is no specifically religious content, although we hope we have a Catholic ethos, and many of our topics have a moral or ethical dimension. Fr Paul is a great source of support and encouragement and leads occasional sessions where we learn about the Mass and have an opportunity to ask questions (followed by a wonderful shared lunch!).
People can drop in and out of the group freely, turn up when they want to. Our current attendance is up to 50 young people - very high.
We aim to run two sets of sessions a year - in spring and autumn - which consist of a number of evening meetings, and some outside activities, with chances to take some of the activities further, or to link up with appropriate organisations.
Each set of sessions has a topic or theme, and we divide the participants into two groups by age. We also offer food, and time and space for the older teenagers to meet and hang out together.
Youth group gets an enormous amount of help from parents, and from members of the parish, many of whom have run workshops, given talks, organised activities, or helped supervise.
In addition, local groups such as the Hampshire Wildlife Trust, the Winchester Visitors’ Group, and our neighbours the Theatre Royal have all been immensely helpful.
We’re always looking for new members, helpers, or good ideas. We are fortunate to share a youth worker with some other parishes. His contact details are available here: Peter McGeady.
We follow Diocesan guidelines on supervision and CRB-checking.
There have been many versions of a youth group at St Peter’s over the years. We are just the latest in a long line of organisers, and we are proud to continue the tradition.
We are: Sue Broadbent, Liza Nahajski, Moira Redmond & Marion Sharpe.
