Winchester Catholic History Group
The Winchester Catholic History Group organises talks and occasional day excursions to places of Catholic interest. The talks are given by acknowledged experts in their field. The Group aims to cover all aspects of Catholic history from earliest times to the present day, both local to Winchester and its surrounds, and national. Ten evening talks a year are held, running from October to July, including the prestigious Roy Wake Memorial Lecture in November
The Group also seeks to publish authoritative and high quality books related to local Catholic history. Those already published are:
• Gervase Belfield, Cardinal Beaufort and his
Almshouse at St. Cross, and Peter Bogan,
The Ancient Catholic Cemetery of St. James in
Winchester. (In one volume. £3.00.)
• Roy Wake (editor), St. Peter’s School,
Winchester 1853-2001. (£5.00.)
Both are available for sale at Group meetings, along with other publications of local Catholic history, or contact John Thornhill, Parish Archivist.
The talks are on the first Monday of the month. Where that is a Bank Holiday, the meeting is usually the following Monday. Please check the programme for confirmation. Meetings are held in Milner Hall, Winchester (accessed from St. Peter Street), starting at 8.00pm. Non-members of the Group are welcome to the talks. There is an admission charge to non-members of £3.00 for single talks.
Membership of the Group is open to all. The subscription, which runs from October to July, is £15.00 per person and covers admission to all monthly talks. A joint subscription for two people who live at the same address is available at £25. Membership can be obtained on the door at any meeting.
